The Horizon Fuel Cell Car Science Kit is a toy car powered by water that comes with a fuel cell, a solar panel, and educational and experiment guides.
Charge up the fuel cell with electrolysis
The Horizon Fuel Cell Car Science Kit takes water and runs a current through it to separate the hydrogen and oxygen. This process is known as electrolysis. It then pushed the hydrogen into the fuel cell battery and removes some of the hydrogen’s electrons to create energy. Once the electrons pass through the wire of whatever you’re trying to power, it re-merges with the hydrogen which is then merged with the oxygen to recreate water as a waste product.
It can even use any kind of water, but the best kind would be pure water, because other water brands use chemicals to clean their water.

Learn about renewable technologies
This fuel cell comes with the toy car, but you can also detach it and use it to power other electronics and even charge your phone (you’ll need to get more stuff for that though). Companies already have some big uses for fuel cells, like in cars that people drive today, they even have their on special gas stations. But instead of splitting water with electrolysis, most supply hydrogen directly, which is the main necessity in a fuel cell. There are also many different types of fuel cells. The one that we showed and taught was the P.E.M. fuel cell. Other fuel cells may be bigger or smaller, and they each give a different amount of energy. While they all use hydrogen in water, or just hydrogen itself, they each have a different process of separating and reconstructing water.
It also comes with a solar panel to perform electrolysis or power the car, so kids and teens can learn about solar power too.
Comes With:
1 x PEM Fuel Cell
1 x Toy Car with motors and LED lights for use with the fuel cell
1 x Solar Panel
1 x Battery Holder for Two AA Batteries to perform electrolysis on the water (batteries not included)
1 x Experiment Guide
Features and Specifications
The Horizon Fuel Cell Car Science Kit uses a PEM Fuel Cell to combine electrolysis with power conversion.
Perform electrolysis on the water using the battery pack or a solar panel. Watch as hydrogen and oxygen gas is formed in the two beakers.
The car drives itself automatically once you turn it on. The LED lights flash as its steers itself around. If it bumps into a wall, it backs up, turns, and keeps going.
Customer Reviews and Scores
At the time of writing, customers on Amazon have awarded the Horizon Fuel Cell Car Science Kit with 4.2 out of 5 stars. A lot of customers have gotten it for their kids’ science fair projects
“great item, easy to assembly and shows very well the usage of hydrogen as fuel.” – Gonzalo Vega Herrera
“…We used it for a science project and the literature with it (on cd/dvd) was helpful.” – TMD
“…I bought this for my son’s science fair project and so far it has been excellent.” – S. Manning
There’s been some complaints over the short life of the fuel cell, however the others don’t seem to have that problem.
Conclusion
We use the Fuel Cell Car Science Kit in our Tech 101 Kids workshops and presentations to teach kids about energy sources and how useful and powerful each one can be.
